If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?
I grew up in Vipperød, a small village, a true family-paradise, on Zealand, Denmark. In high school I found my passion for biology especially cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry. This led me to Odense, where I did my studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Southern Denmark. In my doctoral studies I had the opportunity to dive into the field of hormonal regulation of liver transcription and metabolism. I enjoyed the whole research process from being curious, asking questions and working together with great minds to design the experiments needed to find the missing pieces in the research-puzzle. I wanted to continue doing research and at the same time go abroad to explore a new country and grow in an international research environment. I moved to Stockholm in October 2021 and joined the lab of Professor Jorge Ruas at Karolinska Institutet. This was a big step for me! Coming from a small town of 2,000 citizens to a thousand times that in Stockholm was overwhelming! As I am trying to adapt to my new life as a big city person, I enjoy the endless opportunities this city has regarding entertainment, cultural events, and stores being open in weekends! As a part of Jorge Ruas’ research group, I am working on understanding some of the mechanisms driving non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We hope this project will eventually form the basis of finding new treatment targets helping patients. I am happy to get this chance to bring my knowledge from basic liver transcriptional research into play now with a disease model.
